Obituary of Joan Deriso Carter
Born in Leslie, Georgia, Joan Deriso Carter, 94, was a daughter of the late Horace A. Deriso and Rubie Pearle Laramore. She was the wife of the late Pleasant Lee (P.L.) Carter, Jr. She moved to Columbia in 1946 to attend business college and was one of the first seventeen employees with Colonial Life Insurance Company located in the old Arcade Building. She peacefully passed away Thursday, May 25th, 2023.
After raising her family, she was employed by the J.B. White Department Store as a Buyer and Department Head for 22 years. Mrs. Carter was a member of Shandon Baptist Church and the Joy Sunday School class, where she was active for many years. In her early years, she taught Sunday school to juniors and young adult girls. She was one of the original members of the Senior Adult Choir named Rejoicing.
Surviving are daughters and son-in-law Peggy Ann Carter of Columbia, Nancy Carter Reeves (Rudolph) of West Columbia, son and daughter-in-law, Lee Gilbert Carter (Wendy Salle) of Atlanta, Georgia; granddaughters Elizabeth Reeves Sturkie (Jarrett) of West Columbia, Joanna Reeves Sturkie (Nigel) of West Columbia, Leigh Anne Carter Harrison (Jody) of Loris, South Carolina, and Meredith Carter Bauer (Andre) of Greenville, SC and 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers Walter M. Deriso, George H. Deriso, Horace A. Deriso Jr., sisters Bernice Algine Deriso, Hilda Deriso Walters, Gladys Deriso Bald, Martha Deriso McIntosh and Colleen Deriso McCranie.
The funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at 2 PM at Thompson Funeral Home at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
