Rodney Spangler

Obituary of Rodney Spangler

Rod Spangler, 76, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on May 9, 2023. Born in Lancaster, PA to the late Herbert and Dorothy Spangler, Rod joined the Marine Corps right out of high school where he honorably served his country during the Vietnam War. While stationed in Beaufort, he met and later married Mary Anna, his wife of 53 years.

Rod worked most of his career as an accountant with the Dept. of Mental Health and was known for his meticulous bookkeeping, down to the last penny. He employed these skills outside of work by faithfully serving as treasurer of Whaley Street UMC for nearly 50 years. Beyond this role, Rod could be seen handing out bulletins most Sundays, heading the Administrative Council, and assisting with any church functions where needed. He took pride in his quiet deeds of service.

While he was a man of few words, he could be relied upon to subject others to his corny jokes. He possessed a love/hate relationship with golf but cherished his time spent on the course with his golf buddies. Perhaps, though, his greatest role was that of Husband, Dad, and Papa. A true helpmate for his wife, a dependable problem-solver and fixer-of-all-things for his daughter, and a playmate for his grandchildren, Rod demonstrated his love for his family through his selfless actions.

He is survived by his wife Mary Anna, daughter DiAnna (Jason), sister Doris, and grandchildren Alston and Anna Kate as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Rod will be remembered for his dry wit, generous nature, love of family, and service to God, country, and fellow man. Semper Fi, Marine.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 16th from 11am-12pm at Whaley Street UMC followed by a service at the church at 12pm. Interment will follow at 2pm at Fort Jackson National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Whaley Street UMC.

We wish to thank the doctors and nurses in Richland Hospital's Neuroscience ICU for their wonderful care and support, especially Shannon and Lukas.
