Obituary of Delmas Gregory Patterson

Mr. Delmas Gregory Patterson, 65, of Columbia, entered eternal rest Friday, April 21, 2023. He was born January 12, 1958 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to the late Delmas Monroe and Mary Ruth Patterson. Mr. Patterson served in the United States Coast Guard as an Aviation Electronics Technician 2nd class from 1977-1980. He continued his professional career as a Service Technician at Exxon Office Systems, Superintendent of Wastewater Maintenance for the City of Columbia, and most recently as a chef for the past 25 years of his life. Out of all the hats he wore in his life, his favorite was the honor of being ‘Delpa’ to his grandchildren, Penelope and Sims.

He was preceded in death by his mother, father, step-mother, Elaine Hahn Patterson, and brother Dennis Thevenin. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Heather and Andrew Knitz of Columbia; 2 grand-children, Penelope Margaret and Sims Monroe; friend and former spouse, Pamela Turner; 3 sisters, Gayle Patterson Cook (Tommy) of Winston-Salem, Susan Simpson (Charles) of Winston-Salem, Lenna Sweat (George) of Angier, N.C.; one brother, Arthur Thevenin (Carol) of Point Pleasant, W.V.; and many nieces and nephews, including McKenzie Cook Beamer (Scott), and son, Thomas, of Raleigh, N.C.

The family welcomes friends and loved ones to join in a celebration of remembrance from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 29th at Thompson Funeral Home, 845 Leesburg Rd., Columbia. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Delmas’ honor can be made to The Coast Guard Foundation (https://coastguardfoundation.org).
