Obituary of Norma Jean Anderson Thompson

Norma Jean Anderson Thompson, 91, passed away peacefully on Easter Sunday April 9th, 2023. She was born in Pottawattamie County, Iowa on June 28th, 1931 to the late Robert L and Anna Marie A. Anderson.

Raised on a farm, she attended a “one-room” schoolhouse and graduated from Atlantic High School after her family moved to town. In the early 1950s she moved to California to live with her sister Bev and family where she worked for the telephone company as a switchboard operator. It was there that she met the love of her life, Seaman Charles T. Thompson and after a whirlwind engagement, they were married on March 9th 1955. The young couple moved across the country to SC later that year after Charles or “Tom” as she called him was discharged from the Navy. Together they raised 3 children, always remaining in West Columbia, the last 60 years spent on Methodist Park Road.

Norma was a homemaker and she lovingly taught Sunday school, Bible school, and was a member of Mount Hebron United Methodist Church and the Vivian Senn Circle for 68 years. For the last 43 years, she enjoyed the role of Grandma to her 9 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her loving husband of 53 years, Charles T. Thompson, her parents, 3 brothers, and 2 sisters. She is survived by her children: Cathy T. Ivey (Donald), Michael C. Thompson, and Cindy T. Hydrick (Michael); grandchildren: W. Matthew Thompson, Megan T Carpenter (Tony), Heather I. Long (Alex), Stephen W. Ivey (Marissa), Emily I. Kaminer (Travis), Cody M. Hydrick (Christina), Miles A. Thompson, Juliann M. Hydrick (fiance James Tinker), and Jennifer H. Newton (Zane); great-grandchildren: Caleb, Leah, Piper, and Annabelle Carpenter, Sallie and Samuel Long, Traxton and Trenton Ivey, Andrew, MaryBeth, and Caroline Kaminer, Finn Newton and Evelynn Hydrick; her sister, Beverly Blunden; sisters-in-law, Romell Jones and Marge Anderson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Our family would like to express our gratitude to our brother, Michael Thompson, for being her loving companion for the last 20 years.
