Obituary of Marjorie Gullane Merrilees Hackney

Marjorie Hackney, 97, of Columbia, died on April 5, 2023, peacefully, at home, surrounded by family. Born September 3, 1925 in Boston, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Gullane Merrilees and Margaret Wolfe Merrilees.

She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Ernest Howard Hackney. They had four children: Margaret-Lane Hackney Bowden (Ron), Wayne Hackney, Pamela Hackney O'Cain (Rick) and Howard Andrew Hackney; four grandchildren: Brian (Andrea) O'Cain, Sherry (Joy) O'Cain, Maria McWhite Hackney and William Howard Hackney; and one great grandchild, Rowan O'Cain.

She was a member of Suber-Marshall Memorial United Methodist Church for 68 years and was a faithful and loyal servant of God in many capacities throughout those years. She was a den mother for the Cub Scouts and also taught various Sunday School classes with ages ranging from small children up through adults for approximately 45 years. She started a Tuesday Morning Prayer Group which met for a number of years. Her most honored achievement was in receiving a Perfect Attendance pin for never missing a single Sunday School class for fifty years.

Marjorie enjoyed many hobbies throughout her life, including golf. She had a wonderful instructor for this sport, her father, Andrew Merrilees, who was a professional golfer from Berwick, Scotland. In her younger years, she won a number of trophies. Other hobbies included crocheting, word puzzles, working jigsaw puzzles, playing cards and bingo. In earlier years of her life, she loved writing poetry. She authored a poem for her church titled “The First Thirty-Five Years of Church History”, which was included in a historical publication of the church.

Marjorie was blessed to have some very kind and loving caregivers in the last several years of her life. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Linda, Suzanne, Darlene and Barbara for everything they did to make her feel well taken care of, loved and always special.
