Obituary of Clifton W. Hall, Jr.

Clifton “Clif” W. Hall, Jr., passed away Saturday April 1st, 2023, after a two-and-a-half-week battle with pneumonia at Baptist hospital in Columbia, SC. Clif was born on October 28th, 1940, in Charlotte, NC. He is predeceased by his parents Clifton W. Hall and Pauline Gervais Z. Hall.

Clif was a career railroad man without ever being on the payroll of a railroad. Clif was a member of the National Railway Historical Society in Charleston, SC. He later became a lifetime member of the South Carolina Railroad Museum when it was organized in 1983. Clif occupied the position of Chief Mechanical Officer at the South Carolina Railroad Museum from 1983-2021.  Overall, he helped preserve South Carolina's railroad heritage for 45 years. From working on friend’s cars in his parent’s back yard to repairing 100-ton locomotives, Clif was a self-taught mechanic of the highest degree. When not volunteering on the railroad, Clif enjoyed a 30-year career with SC DHEC as a public well water quality inspector. He enjoyed many friendships over the years and was always willing to help anyone, anywhere, anytime given a good cause. He will be missed by many.
