Obituary of George A. Lyerly

Mr. George A. Lyerly, affectionately known as Butch, was born on October 13, 1943, in St. Matthews, South Carolina. He was the first child of George Lyerly and Lucille (Hopkins) Lyerly. George peacefully transitioned from his earthly home to be with our Lord on March 9, 2023.

George graduated from John C. Ford High School, class of 1961. George was employed at S.M.I Owen Steel for over 29 years as a steel fabricator prior to his retirement as a supervisor in 2009. George was a loyal fan of the Carolina Gamecocks and Pittsburgh Steelers. George could call a foul before a referee! George loved the outdoors, fishing, breeding and raising dogs for over 35 years with whom he passed the love of animals along to his youngest children Rico and Kia. Even when doing nothing at all George could be often seen sitting on the front porch or taking a stroll up and down the street. George most loved sitting out with his family and friends listening to music and was always ready for a party even for no reason in particular.

George is preceded in death by both maternal and paternal grandparents, parents George Lyerly and Lucille "Hopkins" Lyerly. Brother, Mark Lyerly, sister-in-law Cheyenne Lyerly, brother-in-law Earl Williams, and beloved dog Sweet Pea Lyerly.

George leaves to cherish fond memories with his loving wife of 30 years Linda Lyerly but celebrated over 40 years together; brother, Anthony Lyerly of Columbia, SC, sister-in-law, Marsha Lyerly of Columbia, SC. His favorite arguing partner Mother-in-law Vermelle Williams of Columbia, SC, Brother in law David (Evyette) Williams of La Plata, MD, sister in laws, Patricia Williams, Helen (Jed) Burden both of Columbia, SC and Joan Brouton of Newark, NJ. One daughter, Sieka "Kia' Lyerly-Holmes (Henry Holmes) of Columbia, SC, Stepdaughter Ja'Lecia (Ricardo) Colbert of Columbia, SC, Seven sons, Georico "Rico" (Lizzatte) Lyerly, Travis (Karen) Howell, Nicholas "Nick" (Denise) Martin all of Columbia, SC, Terry Lyerly, Toby Lyerly both of Cayce, SC George (Jennifer) Lyerly of Savannah, GA. Sherman (Tara) Lyerly of Marlboro, NJ. 24 Grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends who all will miss him dearly.
