Joan Gleaton

Obituary of Joan Gleaton

West Columbia….Joan Rish Gleaton passed away Wednesday, March 15, 2023.  She was one of three daughters of the late Colston and Helen Taylor of Darlington, S.C.  In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her first husband, Bennie Rish; her daughter, Cindy Rish Poole; her sister, Joyce Lloyd; her sons-in-law, Kurt Heins and Ken Hayes; and her brothers-in-law, Joe Lloyd and James Gossett.

Joan is survived by her second husband, Otis Richard Gleaton; daughters, Kathy Rish Heins and Angie Williams Cassella (Bill); son-in-law, Gerry Poole; sister, Diane Gossett; 8 grandchildren: Jeremy Poole (Anna Lee), Caitlin Poole Gilliam (Taylor), Christopher Williams (Sydney), Miranda Heins, Austin Williams, McKenna Cassella Green (Cameron), Claire Heins, and Kenlee Ann Cassella; and 5 great-grandchildren: Weston Poole, Connor Gilliam, Graham Gilliam, Brantley Poole, and Hallie Gilliam.

She is also survived by her three stepdaughters: Ann Barnes (Bobby), Debbie Hodge (Paul), and Cherry Hayes; along with 6 step-grandchildren and 14 step-great-grandchildren; while also being a beloved “Aunt Joan” to numerous nieces and nephews.

Trained at the former Baptist Hospital Nursing School, Joan worked as a registered nurse in a variety of patient-care settings, most notably at Drs. Latimer and Clark’s family practice in Cayce and the Lexington County Health Department.

She was also a long serving member of Green Hill Baptist Church in West Columbia, managing the “Sunshine Club” and supporting the church in a variety of community projects.

Known for her friendly, out-going nature, Joan never met a stranger and could make you feel like you had known each other for years. She loved baking, traveling, gardening, and her family – especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She rarely ever let a child or grandchild's birthday pass without calling and recounting the day of their birth. She had the biggest heart, a nearly infinite capacity to love, and she will be celebrated and missed by many.

Services will be held Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at Green Hill Baptist Church (1800 Augusta Road, West Columbia, S.C. 29169).  Visitation will begin at 11 am Eastern, followed by the funeral service at 12 pm and a brief graveside service at Celestial Memorial Gardens (3111 Delree St., West Columbia, SC).

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks for donations to be made in her memory to Green Hill Baptist Church of West Columbia, S.C. or to the Shriners’ Hospital.
