Irma Frye

Obituary of Irma G. Frye

Irma G. Frye, 98, of West Columbia, South Carolina, passed away March 5, 2023 after a brief illness. She was born on May 22, 1924 in Columbia, South Carolina to Thaddeous Eugene Gibbons, Sr. and Hattie Halford Gibbons. Irma is survived by her three grandchildren, Kimberly Martin McKenzie (Mitchell), Monica M. Kelly (Ben), and Eric Martin (Laura).  She also leaves behind eight great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Irma spent her life loving and serving others.  She made many friends and brought joy and laughter to all she met.  She especially loved being a mother to her only daughter Helen and was also a wonderful grandmother to all her grandchildren, who affectionately refer to her as ‘Nanny’.  We are thankful she lived a long and healthy life.  She enjoyed reading her bible, drinking her coffee and visiting with friends and family.  She will be missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Melton Frye as well as her daughter and son in law, Helen Anderson Martin & Calvin Martin and all 5 of her siblings: Marion Clamp, Virginia Hemmingway, Doris Bright, Christine Chitwood and T.E. Gibbons, Jr.

The family will receive friends at Thompson’s Funeral Home of Lexington on Wednesday, March 8 at 1:00pm with the funeral following immediately at 2:00pm with Reverend David Spires officiating.  Interment will be at Southland Memorial Gardens Cemetery following the service.
