Obituary of Gary Bacot Spinks

Gary Bacot Spinks left this world on February 9th, 2023, joining her beloved Ray in Heaven.  Gary was born January 13, 1932, the daughter of Eleanor Spratt Bacot and George Alexander Bacot in Fort Mill, South Carolina. Gary was proceeded in death by Ray, her husband of 70 years, her parents, a brother, a sister and an infant son.  She is survived by her daughter Lori, son Michael (Sandra), son Steven (Debra), grandsons Miki, Cameron, Coleman, great grandson Emerson and brother John Bacot.

Gary attended public schools in Fort Mill and Darlington, SC. She attended Winthrop College and Rock Hill Business College.  Gary married Raymond Floyd Spinks in December of 1952.  Gary was a graduate of the Chicago School of Interior Design and the Foreign Service Institute at the State department in Washington, DC, where she was certified as in instructor of English as a Second Language and Western European Protocol for US Government personnel being assigned to European countries.  While living in Munich, Germany, she was Director of Volunteers at the American Hospital.  She also taught English while living at Clark AFB in the Philippines.

Gary traveled through most of Europe while living in Munich (Germany, France, Italy, The Vatican, Austria, Russia and others).  She traveled to Japan, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Taiwan while living in the Philippines.  She also visited Nicaragua, Panama, Colombia, the Bahamas and Argentina.  Her world travels were on US Government business, assignment with World Fashions and personal Wanderlust.

Gary’s biggest and most demanding job was her husband Ray of 70 years as she molded, tolerated, nursed, educated, rescued, trained, pampered, excused and devoted her life to him.  She will be sorely missed by everyone she touched along her journey.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 4th at 12:00 at Thompson Funeral Home, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC.  Reception Luncheon following. 

In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church in Columbia, SC and or St. Jude’s Hospital for Children, Memphis TN.
