Obituary of Dorothy Gibert

Dorothy (Dot) Long Gibert, 92, a lifelong resident of Columbia, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2023. Dot was the daughter of the late Karl S. Long and Marian W. Long.  She was an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

She was married to Alexander (Alex) Hamilton Gibert on April 5, 1952 and they were married for 66 years until his death in 2018. In their earlier years, they traveled and enjoyed many summers in Hilton Head and were avid Carolina Gamecock fans. Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were her greatest treasure and family meant everything to her.

Dot loved people and making connections with anyone she would meet. She was very active in her children’s lives, her church and in the Wildewood Downs Retirement Community where she and Alex lived for many years.  When her children were young, she did volunteer work at their schools, was a Girl Scout leader and enjoyed substitute teaching.  She also volunteered for Fun Fridays, a ministry at her church that worked with special needs adults. Additionally, she and Alex volunteered for many years for Meals on Wheels in the community. She retired as a civil service employee from Fort Jackson after 20 years of service.

She is survived by her three daughters,  Judy (Taylor) Stephens of Mount Pleasant, Alexa (John) Clayton of Blythewood, Shelly (Nathan) of Chapin, and brother Karl S. Long, Jr. (Jackie), of Columbia, as well as grandchildren, Jenna Stephens, Alexa (John) Assey, Russell Clayton, Grant (Kaylyn) Clayton, Carter (Peyton) Hassinger, Geoffrey (Alex) Wilson and Ally Wilson.  She also leaves behind 12 great grandchildren who were the love of her life.

The family would like to thank the staff at Wildewood Downs for the quality care she received. A private family graveside service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 3909 Forest Drive, Columbia, SC 29204.
