Obituary of Henry Rudolph Gainey
On Thursday, February 2, 2023, our beloved father, Opa, and Great Grandfather, Henry Rudolph Gainey, went to heaven peacefully. Henry was 95.
Born July 15, 1927, in West Columbia, SC, he was the son of the late Archie Richard Gainey and Ethel V. Miller Gainey Deese. Married for more than 70 years, Henry was the devoted and loving husband to Margot W. Gainey. Henry was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served his country in Germany during WWII. He was a “jack of all trades” and enjoyed working with anything mechanical. He enjoyed preparing meals for his family and spending time with them, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a life-long member of Congaree Baptist Church and retired from Tamper/Canron after more than 30 years of dedicated employment.
He was predeceased by his loving wife, Margot and his brothers, the late Talmadge Gainey (Louise); and Johnny Gainey (LaVola). Survivors include, daughter, Shirley and her husband Robert (Bob) Spruill; granddaughter, Christie Spruill Cook and her husband Michael (Mike) Cook; great grandchildren, Natalie Michael Cook, Robert “Michael” Cook, and Henry “David” Cook; granddaughter, Lisa Karen Spruill, and grandson, Robert “Craig” Spruill. Also surviving are his brother Thomas Gainey (Patsy), his nieces and nephews, and loved ones in Pforzheim, Germany.
The family will receive friends at Congaree Baptist Church, 101 Pine Ridge Drive, West Columbia, on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at 2:00 PM. A celebration of life memorial service will follow at 3:00 PM in the church sanctuary. Rev. Jerry Freeman will officiate.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation to Mr. Wayne Stanton for his steadfast friendship and frequent visits. In addition, the family would also like to thank the team at NHC Lexington and Abbey Road Hospice for their compassionate care during our Opa’s final days. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make donations in Henry’s memory to Congaree Baptist Church or your favorite charity.
