Obituary of George Thomas Moore, Jr.
GEORGE THOMAS MOORE, JR (“TOMMY”) of Columbia, South Carolina died December 21, 2022 at the age of 84. Tommy was born on March 28, 1938 in Lake City, South Carolina. He was the son of George Thomas Moore (deceased) and Ethel Virginia Moore (nee Frierson, deceased). He was a lifelong resident of Columbia, South Carolina.
Tommy graduated from Olympia High School and went on to receive a Bachelors of Science from the University of South Carolina and then a Masters and Doctorate of Public Health from the University of North Carolina. He was a retired Doctoral Microbiologist with the South Carolina Department of Health & Environmental Control in Public Health. He had a love of woodworking, architecture, reading, and the most beautiful musical voice. His singing talents afforded him the opportunity to sing with the Master Singers Men’s Choir and travel across the U.S. and even to Europe for concerts. Tommy’s love of travel took him across the United States, Canada, and China. Tommy loved his family, colleagues, and friends fiercely. Tommy never met a stranger and he was loved by all.
Tommy is preceded in death by his parents George Thomas Moore and Ethel Virginia Moore, brother Robert Todd Moore Sr, and nephew Robert Todd Moore Jr. He is survived by his sister, Catherine Elizabeth “Betty” and her husband Fred Wolthoff, Jr., and their two sons, Fred, III, and his wife Leona, and Matthew, and his wife Heidi, and their sons Jonah and Joshua and their daughter Katelynn. He is also survived by his niece Tara Gardner and her son Shane and daughter Morgan, and his great-nephew Cooper Moore, son of Robert Todd Moore Jr, of Virginia.
The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 a.m., December 30, 2022, at Thompson Funeral Home, Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Doctors Without Borders or Prisma Children’s Hospital-Midlands.
