Obituary of Larry Marvin Harrelson

Larry M. “Bud” Harrelson, 81, passed away peacefully in his home under the steadfast care of his wife Thursday, August 11, 2022. He was born September 11, 1940, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, to the late Marvin Carlisle Harrelson and Sarah Campbell Burnett.

Bud is a graduate of Limestone College, and received a Master of Education from the University of South Carolina.

Bud worked for the State of South Carolina for 38 years. He spent three years as a teacher in the Spartanburg School District system before beginning his career with Vocational Rehabilitation as a counselor. He was promoted to lead statewide services and specialty counselors for deaf and hearing-impaired clients and moved his family to Columbia, where he expanded this program to national prominence. He was then named as a Regional Supervisor, supervising all VR facilities, staff and programs for a fourth of the state, serving with distinction until his retirement.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Julia Allen “Judy” Harrelson; a daughter, Lynn H. Kenyon (Sid) of Columbia; a son, Leigh Allen Harrelson of Raleigh, NC; grandsons, Aaron Branham (Brittaney), Zachary Branham (Hannah) of Lexington, SC; great-granddaughters, Aurora Rose and Charlee Rae Branham; sisters, Betty Ann Harrelson Yaughn of Macon, GA and Phyllis Harrelson Sparks of Spartanburg, SC.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by brothers, Wade Harrelson, Wayne Harrelson, Johnny Harrelson; sisters, Freda Harrelson and Bonnie Harrelson West.

A graveside service in celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, August 16, 2022, at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209 at 11:00 am.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to SC School for the Deaf and Blind, 335 Cedar Springs Road, Spartanburg, SC.
