Obituary of Suzanne Roberts

Suzanne Roberts, beloved wife, sister, mother, and grandmother, died in her home November 30, 2021. She was just shy of her seventy-sixth birthday. A Graveside Service will take place Saturday, December 11, 2021 at 11am in Greenlawn Memorial Park, 845 Leesburg Rd. Columbia, SC 29209.  The family will receive friends and family one hour prior at the funeral home.

Suzanne was born in New Orleans to Jean Hubbard Park and William Gayle Park. As a child, Suzanne lived in multiple cities and towns throughout the South as required by her father’s work as a civil engineer for the Southern Railway. Suzanne earned a BA at the University of Kentucky in English with a minor in journalism and a MA at the University of South Carolina in early childhood education. She later received a certificate in teaching English as a Second Language. Suzanne taught elementary school for many years and taught English as a second language at USC and adult education at Turning Pages, a non-profit in Columbia. In 1989, Suzanne married James (Jim) Roberts, a math professor at USC.

A seasoned guitar player, Suzanne played her 1964 Martin guitar for her own children and the children she taught. Peter, Paul, and Mary and Linda Ronstadt were some of her favorite musicians. Suzanne was known for her ornery sense of humor and love of children and animals. When her kids were young, she would play hide-and-seek and pretend to be a witch and chase them over the dunes in Myrtle Beach. She was an avid reader, and her house is full of books. Suzanne loved pets, including her teacup poodle, Sammy, and reclusive yet loving cats Toby and Bonnie. Suzanne is survived by her beloved and adoring husband, Jim Roberts, son Jud Wolfskill, daughter Phoebe Wolfskill, sister Betsy Straszheim, and grandchildren Anamika Wolfskill, Rahi Kapadia, Susannah Wolfskill, and Georgia Wolfskill.
