Obituary of Harold Arlen Haddox

Harold Arlen Haddox went home to be with the Lord on Saturday October 9, 2021, exactly 87 years and 3 months from his birth on July 9, 1934. He died from complications of Lewy Body Dementia. He loved the Lord, life, and people.

Harold’s love of music began in his youth, became his career and was his passion until his death. He served the Lord as Minister of Music at churches in Virginia, Conway, Columbia, Orangeburg, and Lexington, SC. Upon his return to the Columbia area, he shared his musical talents at Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church, Good Shepard Lutheran, and finally at St. John’s Lutheran until his passing. Harold had a passion for handbells. For a time, he worked and composed music for Jeffers Handbell Supply. He was active in the Columbia Arts Program, sang in the Palmetto Mastersingers Men’s Choir and in a Barbershop Quartet. Harold had many diverse interests. His love of traveling allowed him to see much of the world. He organized many trips with the Senior Citizens he loved so much and also traveled across the United States, Europe, and Peru. He was an avid Star Trek fan and had hoped to see Shatner in space. He was actively involved with the SC Democratic Convention, spending many hours as a volunteer. He enjoyed sailing in the ocean and on Lake Murray, walking with his dogs, Xia and Cici, and never met a stranger. He loved his family more than anything and before he died, said one of his greatest regrets would be that the great grands would never know how much love he had for them all.

He was predeceased by his father, Goode E. Haddox and his mother, Lois Goodson. Harold is survived by his beloved partner, H. Herny Paul; his precious dogs, Xia & Cici; his sister, Merry Crook; nieces and nephews; his daughters, Lyndal Haddox (Teresa Woods), and Faye Roberts (David); Myrtis Roberts (in-law); his grandchildren, Kory Farman and Megan Graves; his six great-grandchildren: Joshua McCannon, Natalie McCannon, Markus McCannon, Jasper Graves, Kaveri Farman, Kaymiah ‘Kai’ Farman; and his great-great-grandchild, Daisy McCannon.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday October 16, 2021 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 213 St. John’s Church Road, Lexington, SC 29072. For those who cannot make the journey, it will be live-streamed (please use the following link at the time of service: https://client.tribucast.com/tcid/5311697428). The family will receive visitors immediately following the memorial service in the Parish Hall Building.

The family would like to say thank you for the love and care received from St. John’s Lutheran Church; Kindred at Home staff, Right at Home Caregivers, Anna Swartz, and the Prisma Medical Center, especially the emergency room nurse, Rachael, and the 9th floor nurse, Catherine. They went above and beyond with their care and compassion.
