Charles Hallman

Obituary of Charles Davis Hallman

Charles Davis Hallman, 79, was born to Isaiah Madison and Gurnie Bell Sturkie Hallman and spent his youth in the Rosewood community of Columbia. He adored his family, both immediate and extended, spending a lifetime living close to his brothers and sisters. He was a member of Rosewood Baptist Church and was a Dreher High School graduate, class of 1959. Soon thereafter he married Linda Gonzalez, a marriage of 50 years.  He was a veteran of the Army National Guard.

He is survived by his sister Shirley Hallman Foy and sister-in-law Sandra Hallman, both of Columbia. Children Debbie Daniels and husband Brian of West Columbia; Matt Hallman and wife Jessica of Columbia. Grandchildren Caroline and Addie Daniels, Matthew and Will Hallman.

He was preceded in death by wife Linda, his parents, sister Hilda Hallman Weeks, brothers Dewey and Kline Hallman.  Step sisters Pearl Cunningham, Maybell Roof, Alma Taylor, Dorothy Black and step brother Richard Hallman.

His early career began at Mutual Finance Company in West Columbia. He soon left to join the old Columbia Hospital to better their records and accounts management. When the Columbia Hospital closed in 1972 he accepted an opportunity at the new Richland Memorial Hospital. Working in finance and litigation, he became their Director of Professional Hospital Services for collections. Charles shared in the success and growth of the hospital and his department. He retired in 2005 after 36 years of service and dedication from then Palmetto Health Richland.

An avid sportsman, leisure time was often spent managing several hunt clubs in Lower Richland County. His groups were regulars at the Savannah River Plant and Fort Jackson hunts of many years ago. He also kept a home at Isle of Palms with his wife Linda, where they made lasting memories with friends, children and grandchildren. Charles thrived on challenge and hard work but was also a benevolent man. He fostered opportunities to help others better themselves and their careers. He was always ready to give a hand-up to those less fortunate. He was called a friend by many, a stranger to no one and will be missed by those that new him.

He was a proud member of The Sons of Confederate Veterans and his great grandfather’s dutiful service in the War Between the States.
