It was our honor to care for “Pop” the last seven years. He told me his sweet love story, which I would like to share here. In 1944, Johnnie was on a troop train, traveling to Grand Island, Nebraska from Louisiana. His train made a stop in Colorado, where high school girls were handing out sandwiches to the soldiers. He saw the most beautiful girl, but she gave her address to another guy to be a pen pal. His friend was not interested and passed the address on to Johnnie when he asked for it. Johnnie and Elizabeth wrote letters faithfully to each other, and one day he got a short leave and went to visit her for two days in Kit Carson, CO. More letters ensued and then he said “How about let’s get married?” She accepted gladly! She graduated from high school. After wrangling permission from his commanding officer and her parents, the third time they saw each other was in front of a Justice of the Peace! Johnnie adored his “Blondie” the rest of her life, caring for her day and night as she declined in health with Alzheimer’s. Elizabeth loved her “Bud”, never doubting her decision to marry and leave Colorado for South Carolina, he was her one and only love.

I am so sorry to read of your dad’s passing! I talked to him right after daddy died, and we had a great conversation. I will be keeping the family in my prayers. I loved him like a dad!
