Obituary of Arthur James "A.J." Shuping, Jr.

Arthur James Shuping, Jr (A.J.), 90, of Columbia, widower of Carol Erwin Shuping, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2021.

 

Born February 16, 1931 in Salisbury, NC, he was a son of the late Arthur James, Sr and Mary Elizabeth Young Shuping and Margaret Ray Shuping. A.J. was the eldest of 11 children. He served his country in the US Navy for 4 years, both active duty and in the Naval Reserves. Following his military service, he was employed with Southern Railways for more than 37 years where he retired in 1987.

 

A.J. was very involved in his community. He was a proud Charter member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Columbia. He was active for over 62 years with the Masons and was a member of the Andrew Jackson Masonic Lodge #576. He was also an avid Green Bay Packers and University of South Carolina Gamecocks fan. Most of all, A.J. loved spending time with his family. He instilled the love of family to all he met.

 

A.J. leaves behind a son, J. Shuping (Tonya) of Columbia; two daughters, Carole Blocker (Paul) of Canton, GA and Sheila Benz (Todd) of DePere, WI; six grandchildren: Travis Blocker (Beth), Tyson Blocker (Stacey), Lance Blocker, Christopher Shuping, Matthew Shuping and Justin Benz; four great grandchildren: Maci Blocker, Jake Blocker, Reed Blocker and Charlotte Blocker; four sisters: Mary Elizabeth Picking of TN, Jane Corriher of China Grove, NC, Leda Belk of Salisbury, NC and Susan Linn (Bill) of Salisbury, NC; four brothers: Robert Shuping (Jean) of Winston Salem, NC, Romas Shuping (Sarah) of Salisbury, NC, Richard Shuping (Jean) of Jamestown, NC and Tom Shuping (Pat) of Newport, NC. Arthur also had numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family. In addition to his wife and parents, A.J. was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack Shuping and Bill Shuping.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, April 15, 2021 at Thompson Funeral Home at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Entombment will follow in the Greenlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum with Masonic Rites. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00-11:00am prior to the service.
