Obituary of Jerry Conyers

Jerry Conyers, 67, of West Columbia, South Carolina, went to be with the Lord on March 30, 2021. Jerry was born in Bennettsville, SC on June 23, 1953 to James and Addie Conyers.

He grew up in McColl, SC with his parents and his siblings. Jerry graduated from McColl High School and went on to work in the local textile industry. In November 1973, he married his high school sweetheart, Bessie McKenzie, of Bennettsville, SC. In 1979, he and Bessie moved to Columbia, SC. 

Jerry was the founder and owner of The Guttermen for 42 years. He excelled at all of his hobbies outside of work, including playing pool, bowling, drag racing, and most of all coaching his daughter’s softball team. Jerry came to know the Lord later in life through Ron Pelfrey of Congaree Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, trustee, and on many church committees. Jerry was always very generous with his time and support to help those in need. He also enjoyed spending time with his family.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, James and Addie Conyers; brothers, Dick Taylor and Ray Conyers; father-in-law, David McKenzie; son-in-law, William Schoen; and brother-in-law, Frank Burris Sr.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 47 years, Bessie; daughter, Brittany; brother, Charles (Diane) Conyers; sisters, Faye (Charlie) Thompson, and Patricia Conyers; mother-in-law, Dorothy McKenzie; sisters-in-law, Carol Burris, Phyllis (James) Sweatt, Brenda (Dalair) Nobles; and many nieces and nephews who he loved dearly. 

Visitation will be 6:00pm-8:00pm Friday, April 2, 2021 at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, 4720 Augusta Rd, Lexington, SC 29073. Celebration of Life Service will be Saturday, April 3, 2021 at 11:00am at Congaree Baptist Church, 101 Pine Ridge Dr., West Columbia, SC 29172, with a graveside service to follow at 3:00pm at Oak Ridge Cemetery, 219 N.
