Obituary of Vonetta Kannady Arrants

Lexington- Vonetta Arrants, 100, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, March 24, 2021.

A family visitation preceding her funeral will be held from 12:30 until 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 27, 2021 at Thompson Funeral Home, 4720 Augusta Rd., Lexington.  There will be a Graveside Service to follow the visitation at 2:00 p.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Cemetery, 1130 St. Peter’s Rd., Lexington.

Mrs. Arrants was a faithful member of Saint Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Lexington for many years.  She loved her pastors and the many people she knew there.  Pastor Pat Riddle will conduct her funeral service, and Mrs. Shannon Burnett will sing her favorite hymn.

Vonetta had a zest for life, which revolved around her family and friends.  She was born on December 19, 1920 in Hollow Creek near what is now Lake Murray.  Her parents were Walter Carlisle Kannaday and Nola Mettze Kannaday.  As the oldest of four children, she took on responsibilities at a young age, and she worked hard to provide for her younger sisters and brother.  She was a 1939 graduate of Brookland Cayce High School, where she was a proud member of the Beta Club.  She was working at Silver’s 5&10 in Columbia when she met her future husband, Reuben Arrants, from Hopkins, SC   While dating during WWII, Reuben was sent to the Philippines to work as an airplane mechanic.  Vonetta waited faithfully for him to return. During that time, she worked in the Office of Columbia Mills and saved her money to help her parents buy a house.  After three years, Reuben returned to the United States, and they were married on October 27, 1946 at Mount Hebron Methodist Church in West Columbia.  During their 57 years of marriage, they lived and worked in Columbia, SC, Savannah, GA, Jacksonville, FL, Montgomery & Demopolis, AL and Spartanburg, SC.

Vonetta was predeceased by her parents, Walter Carlisle and Nola Kannaday, her husband, Reuben, her sisters, Ruth and Mary Ann, her brother, Walter Carlisle, Jr, and a nephew, Trey Kannaday.  She is survived by a nephew and several nieces.

Vonetta’s family would like to thank everyone a Jenni-Lynn Assisted Living, who took excellent care of her. She felt loved and called it her home.  We also would like to thank the people from Comfort Care Hospice. They have been so helpful in the past few weeks.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, 119 N. Church St., Lexington, SC.
