Obituary of Harold Thompson, Jr.

Harold Thompson, Jr., 89, former resident of Union, South Carolina, peacefully transitioned to his Heavenly Home on January 19th, 2021.   Mr. Thompson resided at the William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia, South Carolina, where he spent the latter part of his life. His services will be private.

Mr. Thompson was born in Tuckertown, South Carolina, on January 23, 1931 to the late Pack and Fannie (Johnson) Thompson .  Upon his graduation from Sims High School of Union, South Carolina, Harold joined the Air Force.   After his Air Force service, he furthered his studies at Howard University in Washington, District of Columbia.  He also attended the Federal City College in Washington, District of Columbia for his undergraduate studies.  He completed his Graduate Studies at the District of Columbia Teacher's College. Mr. Thompson was fond of education and politics.

After graduation, Mr. Thompson had the pleasure to work for Washington, District of Columbia’s first African-American Mayor, Walter Washington, and he also served alongside former the Mayor of Washington, D.C., Marion Barry, Jr.   Mr. Thompson often spoke of his fond memories of these political achievements.    

His favorite memory from his political achievements in the District of Columbia centered around the 1984 Democratic National Convention.   

After retiring from the Federal government in the late 1990’s, Mr. Thompson returned to Union County, South Carolina.  He served as a long-term Substitute Teacher for Union County Comprehensive High School, and started an after school tutoring program.  

He is survived by his sister, Lillian T. Sims of Washington, District of Columbia and his beloved and faithful niece, Lea Tricia Murphy of Carlisle, South Carolina, along with a host of nieces and nephews.  Mr. Thompson was predeceased by his parents, siblings, Robert Thompson, Hiram Thompson, and Bernice T. Arrington-Loyd.
