Obituary of Gregory Dunsing Hentschel

Columbia, South Carolina – Gregory “Greg” Dunsing Hentschel , 81, was called for his final mission to be with his Lord and Savior on January 10, 2021, while at Prisma Health Richland with his wife, Norma Jean nearby.

Born on July 27, 1939, in Brooklyn, New York, Greg was the son of Charles and Claire Dunsing Hentschel. Greg joined the United States Army in 1955 and retired after 21 years of honorable and patriotic service to his country. He earned two Bronze Stars with VALOR as a Senior Explosive Ordinance Disposal Chief and Armorer Specialist. He excelled in explosive ordinance disposal and served as an advisor for nuclear weapon disposal under the Nixon administration. While stationed at Fort Jackson, Greg was selected to serve with the State Law Enforcement Division as Captain of the Narcotics Division, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technician, SWAT member and Homeland Security training coordinator until his retirement in September 2006. Greg pursued his passion for the shooting sports and shared his passion with many. He loved his work, colleagues and occupation. A military honors funeral will be held at Fort Jackson National Cemetery on Thursday, January 14 at 1:00PM.

Greg is survived by his wife, Norma Jean (TC) Hentschel, daughter, Claire Hentschel Saunders, her husband Bret and their children and grand-children, step-son, James Dean Sorrow, brother Chris Hentschel, sister-in-law Carol Ann and their children. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to Pawmetto Lifeline Animal Shelter in Columbia, SC.
