Obituary of Yong Sop Joseph Chon

Yong Sop (Joseph) Chon, 82, passed away on Saturday, January 9, 2021 in Columbia,SC. Born in Korea, Mr. Chon was the son of In Kyu Chon and In Suk Han. After servingas a firefighter in South Korea, he immigrated with his family to the United States in 1977. Through his hard work, sheer determination and work ethic, he and his wife opened St. Andrews Seafood Market in 1983 and developed it into a successful small business in the Irmo area which is still in operation as of today.

Throughout his life, Joseph found joy in many activities, including golfing, cooking, playing cards and most importantly, spending time with his beloved family and friends.  He was a great father and had much pride and love for his children and grandchildren. Mr. Chon’s remembrance is cherished and survived by his wife of 55 years Kuk Cha, sister Chong Hui Chon, sister Seung Hui Chon (Jung Chul Kim), brother Dong Sop Chon and brother Kun Sop Chon (Mee Ryon Kim). He is also survived by his son James Chon (Jin Young) and daughter Chae Encarnacion (Jose) as well as his grandchildren, Ashley, Andrew, and Christine.

The family would like to extend their profound gratitude to Cheryl James of Wildewood Downs LTC for going above and beyond in helping the family stay in touch with Joseph during the pandemic. Her kindness and warm spirit will be forever appreciated.

A small visitation for the family will be held on Sunday, January 17th, 2021 from 12pm to 1:30pm in the Greenlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel followed by burial service in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
