Obituary of Sarah Stuart McElroy Harvie

Sarah Stuart McElroy Harvie, 89, of Lexington, SC, wife of the late Jacquelin (Jack) Burwell Harvie, former Marine and Director of the YMCAs in Richmond, VA; Arlington, VA; Sumter, SC; Spartanburg, SC; and Cincinnati, OH.

Born July 25, 1931 in Rutherfordton, NC, Sarah was the youngest of 5 sisters. Her Grandfather was Joseph R. Wilson who was the brother of her Great Uncle Woodrow Wilson. Her mother Alice Wilson and father Rev. I.S. McElroy, Jr. were married in the White House because President Wilson could not leave the White House during WWI to attend their wedding in Richmond. Her parents were one of the few couples to have been married in the White House that were not children of the sitting president.

Sarah was an accomplished singer and shared her beautiful soprano voice both professionally and personally throughout her life. She was a choir director for churches in Sumter, and Spartanburg, SC performed with multiple choral groups wherever she lived, and broke into God Bless America and Happy Birthday whenever the occasion arose. A graduate of Longwood College with a masters from Converse College, she was also an educator and loved teaching others to use their voices for both the Glory of God and entertainment. She was a Daughter of the American Revolution and her love for this country was only surpassed by her love of her family and the Lord. She read her Bible every day. She wore many hats through her life: musician, teacher, friend, sister, Gmom, mother, and wife but her favorite self-proclaimed nickname was COG which means Child of God.
