Obituary of Fay Crews Shull

Fay Crews Shull, 97, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, December 27, 2020. She is survived by her daughter, Jan Harmon (Rev. Dr. Paul Harmon); her granddaughters: Leslie Hendon (Trey Hendon) and Amy Steptoe (Adam Steptoe); two great grandchildren: Ellie Hendon (six), and Baker Steptoe (19 months); her sister, Marilyn Biernaski (Gene Biernaski); 24 nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog, Tawney. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Mamie Crews, and her husband of nearly 53 years, Leslie M. Shull.

Fay was born in Zolfo Springs, Florida on October 13, 1923. She moved with her family to Columbia when she was eleven and later graduated from University High School. Fay worked in the business office at Fort Jackson during WWII, and Sears before becoming bookkeeper for her husband’s business, L. M. Shull Construction Company.

She was a member of Greene Street United Methodist Church for 85 years, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, was a member of the Administrative Council, and was President of the United Methodist Women. As part of her work with the Eula Hornsby Circle, Fay was named "Volunteer of the Year" by the Midlands Mental Health Agency. She also enjoyed going “gallivantin’ with the Spark Plugs” senior group.

Fay was a Girl Scout leader, an active member of the Order of Eastern Star - New Brookland Chapter, where she served as Worthy Matron, and a member of the West Columbia Assembly Advisory Board for The International Order of the Rainbow for Girls. As a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother (Gigi), Fay made sure to show up for any and all events, band competitions, plays, and concerts to cheer on and support her family. She especially enjoyed regular outings to Zesto’s with her sister, Marilyn.

Fay loved to crochet baby blankets for family and friends, and donated hundreds of blankets to at-risk teens and anyone else who needed one. She was well known for her apple cake, her sweet spirit, and her witty comments. Fay loved God, her family, and all of creation. That love was evident in her daily life.

A private service for Fay will be held at Greene Street United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Ministries of Greene Street United Methodist Church, 1106 Greene St, Columbia SC, 29201 or Killingsworth (www.killingsworth-home.com), 1831 Pendleton St, Columbia, SC 29201.
