Obituary of Mary Frances McGill Barber

Mary Frances McGill Barber went to her heavenly home on December 14, 2020. Mary Frances was born on January 18, 1927 in Kingstree, SC. She was the daughter of Harold T. and Madeline McGill.

She graduated from Kingstree High School and University of SC and was a French and English high school teacher before becoming a full time homemaker and mother. Mary Frances was an accomplished soprano singer in Columbia and sang in the USC Chorus, the Columbia Choral Society, Capital Life Chorale, and the Shandon United Methodist Choir. She also performed as a soloist in many churches, and the Morning and Afternoon Music Club of Columbia. She was on the Altar Committee and was the pianist of her Sunday School at Shandon United Methodist Church. Mary Frances was also a talented seamstress and needle worker, avid reader, home and yard designer, and plant propagator.

She is predeceased by her beloved husband James D. Barber Jr.; son, James D. Barber III; and brother, Harold T. McGill, Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Alison B. Mullison (Warren); grandchildren, James and Rebecca; nieces, Pam McGill, Jan Jordan (David), and Kate Culbreth (Jim); and nephews Billy McGill, Hal McGill (Mary Lisa), Phillip Banks, Jay Banks (Kathy), and John Banks (Nancy).

Mary Frances and her family are most grateful for the loving care of Tammy Smith and the staff at Life Care Center of Columbia during her final years. Per her request and due to Covid concerns, funeral service and burial are private.
