Obituary of Carolyn Rogers Phillips

Carolyn Rogers Phillips passed away on Saturday, December 5th after a long illness. She was born in Darlington County, SC to Coit Benjamin and Ruth Hoffmeyer Rogers.

Carolyn attended Bowling Green College in Kentucky and worked many years as a legal secretary, working for a while at the South Carolina Attorney General’s office, and later for several local law firms.

Married to James “Jimmy” H. Phillips, with whom she had three children, Carolyn was a long-time resident of the St. Andrews community and devoted member of St. Andrews Baptist Church. She served as a Cub Scout Den Mother, a Sunday school teacher, and proud booster of all her children’s activities. She is fondly remembered as a skilled and creative crafter, a terrific cook, and the first person on your porch with a casserole dish when a crisis hit. Her family and friends especially revere the care she gave to her husband during his dying years.

She is pre-deceased by her husband, and two brothers, Coit Rogers and Jack Rogers. She is survived by brother Charles Rogers of Florence, SC; sister Irene Evans of Myrtle Beach, SC; and brother William “Billy” Rogers of Conyers, GA. Left to remember her are her son, James “Buster” H. Phillips, Jr. (Cheryl) of West Columbia, SC; daughter Cathy Palen (Dan) of Fountain Hills, AZ; daughter Lynn Alford (Chip) of Surfside Beach, SC; and 7 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and other loving relatives.

The family wishes to extend the most heartfelt thanks to MSA Hospice for their care in her final days, especially Susan, June, Aretha, Peggy and Charlette, and to the St. Andrews Baptist Church community, who continued to visit and send cards.

A socially-distant graveside service will be held at Greenlawn Cemetery on Wednesday, Dec. 9 at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Andrews Baptist Church, mysabc.org, 230 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29210.
