Obituary of Harold William Haltiwanger

Harold William “Bill” Haltiwanger Sr, 81, of Columbia passed from this life into eternal life on November 6, 2020.

Bill was born on December 9, 1938 in Greenwood, South Carolina, but most of his early childhood years were spent in Anderson, South Carolina. He is the son of the late Harold Sidney Haltiwanger and Evelyn Sutherland Haltiwanger.

After graduating from Anderson Boys School in 1957, he entered the United States Air Force and proudly served his country for 20 years. He served lengthy deployments in Vietnam, South Korea, the Philippines, and Hawaii as a tech sergeant. After his honorable discharge, he worked for the United States Postal Service and Michelin.

Those left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife, Linda Bishop Haltiwanger of Columbia; sister, Gail H. Boyer; brothers, George (Susan) Haltiwanger and John (Linda) Haltiwanger; children, Harold William “Billy” (Tammy) Haltiwanger Jr and Pam H. (Tony) Stansell; stepchildren, Rusty (April) Rhoad and Amanda R. (Lee) Strother; grandchildren, Sid (AlexSzandRia) Haltiwanger, Sally H. (Wes) Meno, Mary Evelyn Stansell, Chesney, Lindsey, and Colton Rhoad, Layla and Leslee Strother; great grandchildren, Ethan and Natalie Haltiwanger, and Evelyn Meno; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 11, 2020 at 11:30am at Thompson Funeral Home at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 845 Leesburg Rd. Columbia, SC 29209. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service. A committal service will be held on Monday, November 16, 2020 at 3:00pm at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Rd. Columbia, SC 29229.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Children Hospital.
