Obituary of Gladys Haltiwanger Williams Benton

COLUMBIA - Gladys Haltiwanger Williams Benton, 97, of Columbia and formerly of Cayce, SC, passed away April 30, 2020. She was born on November 12, 1922 in Cayce to JD and Vennie (Daniels) Haltiwanger.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Benton was predeceased by her first husband, Quinton (Brownie) Williams, with whom she lived in California from 1946-1962. She then moved to Columbia for the remainder of her life and later married Quinton Benton, who is also deceased. Her brothers, Malchoir, John and Billy Haltiwinger, along with her sister, Vera Haltiwinger Ping, predeceased her as well.

Gladys is survived by her niece, Gerri Thorpe, her husband, Doug, their children, Christine Smith, Stacy Lippert and Stacy's son, Zachary; niece Jan Haltiwanger Savitz, her husband Phil, and their children Zack Savitz and Erin Savitz-Absulio; nephew Danny Haltiwanger, and Gladys' best friend and caretaker, Nina Shirer.

Gladys was a graduate of Brooklyn-Cayce High School in 1939 and a longtime member of St. Andrews Baptist Church. She most recently resided at Pruitt Health on Forest Lake Drive. The family would like to thank her many friends and support persons there. Gladys enjoyed socializing and was very well-liked by her many friends.

Due to the Covid-10 virus, a private service will be held for the family. Memorials may be made to either of the following: Animal Rescue of your choice; St. Andrews Baptist Church - ATTN: Homebound Ministry, 230 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29210; Forest Lake Bible Church, 2401 Decker Boulevard, Columbia SC 29206.
