Obituary of Bernard Shankman

Bernard "Bernie" Shankman, 96 passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, February 14, 2020.


He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Josie Shankman, brothers, Nathan Shankman, Louis Shankman, along with his first wife Lucylle Shankman.


Bernie is survived by his children, Frank (Kathy) Reynolds, Mark Reynolds, Pam (Tim) Taylor;  six grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren.  Also surviving are many nephews and nieces.


After serving twelve years in the US Army, he made his home in Washington D.C. where he worked in the grocery business.  He retired at the age of 62 and moved to South Carolina.


Bernie had a very active life pursuing his passion for people and motorcycles.  Bernie was a member of the Harley Owners Group as well as the Post 6 American Legion Riders.  As a Legion rider, you could find him participating in flag lines and various veteran activities.  He could always be found riding at the front of each group, often carrying the American flag in honor of this great country.  He was a 2018 inductee in the South Carolina Biker Hall of Fame.


Visitation will be held at Thompson Funeral Home  200 State Street, West Columbia, SC on Monday, February 17, 2020  from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm.  A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home.   Graveside services will be held at a date to be announced at Arlington National Cemetery.


Bernie requested no flowers at his Memorial Service.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Legion Riders Post 6, 200 Pickins St., Columbia, SC 29205 or Carolina Sunshine For Children, P.O. Box 1803, Columbia, SC 29202
