Obituary of Dorothy Ann Bass

Dorothy Ann Bass, 88, of Cayce, passed away on Thursday, July 4, 2019. Born in Martin, Georgia on July 17, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Ira Lee and Molly Ann Stonecypher Smith. She was the wife of the late Millard H. Cox, who died after a battle with lung cancer. They were married for 41 years. Her second husband was the late James Benjamin Bass, Sr. They were married for 22 years. Dot attended North Greenville Junior College, Furman University, and the University of Cincinnati. She was a teacher for 43 years, and was nominated in 1986 for Educator of the Year. She enjoyed playing the piano, and served as pianist for five different churches throughout her life. She also served as pianist for the Men’s Chorus at North Greenville Junior College and the West Columbia Men’s Chorus.

She is survived by her step-children, Jimmy Bass (Nickie), Michael Bass (Brenda), Robby Bass (Toni), Alecia Bass, and Teresa Miller (Jody); as well as six step-grandchildren, nine step-great-grandchildren, and numerous cousins and in-laws.

The family would like to thank the compassionate staff at Oakleaf Village of Lexington, where Miss Dot resided for the last years of her life.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, July 8, 2019 at 11am in the chapel at Thompson Funeral Home- Lexington, officiated by Pastor Dow Welsh and Pastor Gary Farmer. The family will receive friends at the funeral home an hour prior to the service, beginning at 10am. Burial will follow in Southland Memorial Gardens.
