Obituary of Ilona Schulze Mack

Ilona Schulze Mack, 76, of Columbia, SC died on June 8, 2019. She was the widow of Charles R. Mack. She was born in Berlin, Germany, the daughter of Gustav Adolf Schulze and Else Linke Schulze.

Following graduation from the West Berlin school system, Mrs. Mack was employed by the West Berlin Department of Education. She married Charles R. Mack, who was stationed with the US Army in Berlin, in 1965 and moved with him to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where he attended graduate school. While in Chapel Hill, Mrs. Mack was employed by the Library Systems of the University of North Carolina. From 1968 to 1970, Mrs. Mack resided with her husband in Florence and Rome, Italy. In 1970, the Mack’s moved to Columbia where her husband had received a faculty appointment at the University of South Carolina. Mrs. Mack became a United States citizen in 1976.

In Columbia, Mrs. Mack was employed by the Columbia Museum of Art and by the Geology Department of the University of South Carolina. She took an active interest in local equestrian activities and was an avid fan of the USC men's and women's soccer teams. 

Together with her husband, Mrs. Mack co-edited "Like a Sponge Throw into Water"; Francis Lieber's European Travel Journal of 1844-1845 published in 2002 by the University of South Carolina Press. She also co-authored with him articles on German ceramics published in The Magazine Antiques and in the Southeastern College Art Conference Review and on European decorated enamelware appearing in the National Graniteware Society Newsletter. Mrs. Mack was co-donor of the Charles and Ilona Mack Collection of East German Pottery presented to the Columbia Museum of Art in 2004.

Mrs. Mack is survived by her daughter, Katrina Mack Daniels, son-in-law, Russell Daniels, and by her granddaughter, Gabriele Daniels, all of Columbia, SC.
