Obituary of James Warren Summey
James Warren Summey (US Army MSGT Ret)
James Warren Summey, 79, of Columbia, SC peacefully passed away at home on February 18, 2019. He was born November 2, 1939, in Athens, GA and graduated from Paris High School in Greenville, SC. Jimmy joined the Army in 1959 and proudly served his country until he retired honorably as a Master Sergeant in 1981. During his career, he served a combat tour in Vietnam, two overseas tours in West Germany, and numerous stateside assignments. Jim's outstanding duty performance was recognized by numerous medals to include: Meritorious Service Medals; Army Commendation Medals; Vietnam Service Medal; Vietnam Campaign Medal; Vietnam Cross of Gallantry; Combat Infantry Badge, and Drill Sergeant Identification Badge.
Upon his retirement at Fort Jackson SC, Jim returned and remained in Columbia, SC. He held several Service Technician jobs ending with McNair Law Firm until his second, and final, retirement. James was an avid Remote Control enthusiast, building from scratch: cars; boats; airplanes, and helicopters. He also enjoyed boating and fishing on Lake Murray.
James was predeceased by his beloved wife, Anneliese, and his parents, Harold and Cleo Summey of VA. He is survived by his four daughters: Karen Venne and husband Roger of West Columbia, SC; Wanda Sayles of Hauula; HI; Brenda Kailieha of Honolulu, HI, and Beverly Roberts and husband Jason of Lexington, SC. He was the brother of: Dicky Summey and wife Linda of Pasadena, MD; David Summey and wife Amy of Edgewater, MD, and Jil Mason Scheer of Hays, TX. James also is survived by twelve grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and many other family members and friends. Inez Black of Lexington, SC has been a cherished friend and companion to James for the last several years.
Jimmy was a loving and steadfast presence, who was always ready to help any family member or friend in need. He will be sorely missed by all, but we are comforted by knowing he is having a grand reunion with all his loved ones in Heaven. Rest in peace, Dad, Brother, Uncle, Opa, and Papa.
