She was preceded in death by her husband, Lever; her daughter, Elizabeth T Evans; her son-in-law, Ben E Johnson; her granddaughter, Theresa J Leinbach; and her siblings, Henry R Swygert (killed in combat in Italy during WWII), Jesse M Swygert, Franklin D Swygert, and Mary S Fickling.

She is survived by her daughter, Theresa T Johnson; and sons, Henry H. Taylor (Mollie) and George P. Taylor (Judy); as well as her son-in-law, John C. Evans; 9 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Virginia S. Taylor, Dorothy S. Spires, Martha S. Wright, and Bonnie S. Lawson.

Gladys was raised and lived most of her life in the Sandy Run section of Calhoun County. She graduated from St. Matthews High School. Gladys retired after 30 years of service from the South Carolina Department of Transportation where she was the manager of the Title Section of the Division of Motor Vehicles. She was also co-owner of Mid-State Auto Auction and past president of the SC Automobile Dealers Association.

Gladys was an active member in her community. She served on the Calhoun County Disabilities Board and organized the St. Jude’s Bike-A-thon annually in Sandy Run. She was an active and devoted member of her church, Sandy Run Lutheran Church, where she received a lifetime membership to WELCA (the church women’s group). It was tremendous dedication to her community that earned her the honor of a declaration presented on her 80th birthday by Rep. Joe Wilson which recognized the date of her birth as Gladys Taylor Day.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, January 20, 2019 at Sandy Run Lutheran Church and burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church sanctuary following the burial service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sandy Run Lutheran Church, 1927 Old State Road, Swansea, SC 29160. The family wishes to express thanks to Annie Ruth Favor, the late Thelma Rumph, and the caregivers at Caris of Charleston Hospice who provided compassionate care and support. Last but not least, the family wishes to express a special thanks to Theresa, who during a very stressful time in her own life, provided our mother with care and comfort beyond imagination.
