Sid Crim

Obituary of Sid Crim

Cayce—Sid Crim, 76, former president and general manager of The State, died Sunday, December 30, 2018 after an 18-year struggle with Parkinson’s disease.

Mr. Crim enjoyed a long and productive career in the publishing industry, holding executive positions at newspapers in West Virginia as well as South Carolina. He began his career at The State but in the 1970s he worked in West Virginia–in Charleston and Beckley. He was head of the newspaper in Beckley, vice president-elect of the West Virginia Press Association and a board member of the Southern Newspaper Press Association (SNPA).

Mr. Crim became executive vice president and general manager of The State-Record Company in 1980. He was later named president. He was president of the South Carolina Press Association and continued his leadership roles in the SNPA, where he chaired the SNPA Foundation and many committees.

Sid Crim was the son of the late Reuben Simeon Crim and Mattie Ione Berry Crim. After graduating from Brookland-Cayce High School, he entered the University of South Carolina. There he graduated cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

In healthier days, Mr. Crim and his beloved wife Cathy traveled to many countries. Although he was a successful executive in two states, Sid Crim’s personal and philosophical identity was shaped and maintained by the Lexington communities where he grew up–and where he died. He built his retirement home on a lot within a shout of Brookland-Cayce High School.

Mr. Crim is survived by his wife of 33 years, Cathy; his children, Berry W. Crim (Laura) and Jordan C. Boggs (Jarrod); granddaughters Katherine Boggs and Andie, Mattie and Bethany Grace Crim; sisters Jo Walling and Mary Wingfield. He was predeceased by a sister, Sarah Sharpe.

Services will be Thursday, January 3, 2019 at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington (4720 Augusta Road, Lexington, 29073). Visitation will be 10 a.m. until the noon services. Entombment will be held privately by the family. Mr. Crim will lie in repose at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia on 200 State Street West Columbia, SC 29169 until the end of the day Wednesday, January 2, 2019. Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice. One more thing: Sid’s last words were: “Farewell my friends.”
