Obituary of Mary Swygert DesChamps

Mary Swygert DesChamps, of Columbia, died peacefully on October 30, 2018. She was born in Laurens, South Carolina on January 11, 1925 and was the daughter of Thomas I. and Martha Swygert.

Mrs. DesChamps attended Columbia city schools, graduating from Dreher high school and the University of South Carolina where she studied business and pledged Chi Omega sorority. In 1938, Mrs. DesChamps was a charter member of “The Bridge Club” and remained close friends with these ladies throughout her life. She too was a member of the Camelia Ball and participated in various organizations over the years. As a longtime member of Shandon Presbyterian Church, Mrs. DesChamps was active in Sunday school, church circles, and was involved in many church events. She retired from the Richland County Treasurer’s Office in 1991.

Mary DesChamps is survived by her daughters, Betsy DesChamps and Susan Kay (John); and two grandchildren, Mary Fraser Kay and Elizabeth DesChamps Kay. She is also survived by her sisters, Betty Swygert Coggins, Sara Swygert Buck, and Jane Swygert Wrigley, all of Columbia, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Fraser “Buster” DesChamps.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 11, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Shandon Presbyterian Church with a reception immediately following in Davis Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shandon Presbyterian Church, 607 Woodrow St, Columbia, SC 29205; or PAALS (Palmetto Animal Assisted Life Services), 221 N. Grampian Hills Rd., Columbia, SC 29223.

Greenlawn Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements. A private burial will take place at a later date.
