Obituary of Donald "Pete" Shumpert, Jr.
Donald “Pete” Shumpert, Jr., 62, of DeFuniak Springs, Florida, passed away on Monday, July 16 2018 after a gallant battle with liver cancer. He was born on June 30, 1956 in Belleville, Illinois where the family settled in Florida upon his father's retirement and has returned home now in the loving arms of Jesus his Lord and Savior. "Well done my good and faithful servant". He was the son of the late Donald Lee Shumpert, Sr. and Dixie Lee Watts Shumpert.
He maintained a courageous attitude until the very end and was a real history "buff" especially with WWI and WWII battles and an expert in military guns and other weapons. He loved natural foods, macrobiotics and homeopathic medicine, studied his Bible faithfully both in Hebrew and Latin and observed the Sabbath as specified in the scriptures and was well-known for his gunsmith expertise. In January, he retired from the Florida Department of Transportation as a heavy equipment operator.
He is survived by two sisters, Nancy Bryant and Joy Moore both of DeFuniak Springs, FL. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Randy Shumpert.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at 12:00 PM at Fort Jackson National Cemetery. Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington is assisting the family.
