William Laval, III

Obituary of William Lawrence Laval, III

William “Larry” Laval, III, 71, of Mt. Pleasant, SC passed away July 9, 2018 at Providence Hospital in Columbia, SC.  He was born on July 17, 1946 in Jonesville, SC to the late William “Buddy” and Corinne Cunningham Laval.

Larry is survived by Joyce S. Laval, his loving wife of 48 years; son, William “Tripp” L. Laval, IV (Jessica); daughter, Jennifer L. Lloyd (Kirk); his granddaughters, Caroline Marie Laval and Julia Marshall Laval; and his sister, Billie L. McBride.  He was preceded in death by brother-in-law, Francis “Friday” McBride.

Friends are invited to attend a 10:30 AM memorial service, Friday July 13, 2018 at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 3200 Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC.  An online guestbook is available at www.thompsonfuneral.com.

Larry grew up in Jonesville, SC.  He then attended and graduated from the University of South Carolina where he further developed his lifelong love for all things Gamecock!  While at Carolina he met Joyce and they were married shortly after her graduation.  Between his graduation and their wedding, Larry was drafted into the US Marine Corps.  His service was a source of pride for Larry, and continues to inspire his family and friends.  Professionally, Larry was a flooring and interior building products sales manager, serving many commercial contracting and distributors across the Eastern US.

Larry was an AVID Gamecock fan and they were probably the greatest source of recreation and pride for him.  He was a longtime Gamecock club member and had great friends with whom he tailgated and talked Gamecock sports.  He and his fraternity brothers made an annual away game pilgrimage to an SEC football game for many years.

Family, especially his beloved granddaughters, were the center of Larry’s life in retirement.  He (“Pop” to the grandkids) and Joyce loved to travel and spend time at their Lake Wateree vacation house cooking, boating and laughing!  At home in Mt. Pleasant, he and Joyce enjoyed many fun nights with their neighborhood “Cocktails at 6” group and often hosted friends and family for beach trips and exploring the beautiful city of Charleston.  In April of this year, he and Joyce spent two weeks vacationing in Italy together where they visited many cities and enjoyed the fine Italian cuisine and drinking delicious Italian wine.  One of the last family gatherings was a trip to the Isle of Palms on June 22nd for a family photo session.  While Larry never got to see the photographs, the family is forever grateful to have the photos as a lasting memory of him and what he meant to them all.

The family would like to thank the physicians and staff at Providence Hospital, especially Dr. Morgan and nurses, Jay, Holly and Teresa, for their compassionate care during his last days.  Memorials are requested to be made to the American Heart Association at www.heart.org.
