Obituary of Robert Eugene Baldwin

Robert Eugene Baldwin, 85, passed away on June 23, 2018 after battling a long illness.  He was born January 5, 1933 in Darlington SC. to the late Harley Finnie and Ellen (Mable) Baldwin.

Gene attended Saint John's High School in Darlington SC.  He enjoyed all sports and played in the Old Tobacco Bowl All Star Game.  In 1955 he married his true love the late Elizabeth "Jean" (Rogers) Baldwin of Florence SC.  After marriage, he and Jean moved to Columbia SC to go to work for Sears and Roebuck.  He retired as a Lt. Colonel from the South Carolina Army Reserves and in 1994 the South Carolina Insurance Department.  After retirement he and Jean relocated to Murrells Inlet SC.

Gene and Jean raised a daughter and two sons in Columbia SC.  A passionate follower of Gamecock Athletics, he also enjoyed anything outdoors especially a round of golf or a nice fishing trip.  But most of all he enjoyed being around his grandchildren and family, enjoying a good meal and the next Gamecock event.

He was a true gentleman and will be terribly missed.  However, Jean, his brother Harmon, and all of his family and friends that has preceded him have welcomed him into heaven with open arms.  He is survived by his daughter Leslie Hewett, sons Robert (Missy) Baldwin, and Scott (Susan) Baldwin.  He is also survived by his grandchildren Melissa "Lissa" Baldwin, Brandon Hewett, Austin Hewett, Scottie (Katelyn) Baldwin, and Kyle Baldwin, one brother Billy (Ann) Baldwin, and one sister Annette Baldwin.

Gene's family will receive friends from 9:30 until the 10 a.m. committal service at Greenlawn Serenity Gardens Cemetery, 6601 Winwan Dr., Columbia SC., 29209 on Tuesday June 26, 2018.  In lieu of flowers please make donations in Gene's name to the Alzheimer's Association, 140 Stoneridge Dr. #210, Columbia, SC., 29210.
