Joseph Claude Gates, Jr.

Joseph Claude Gates Jr passed away on October 21, 2021 at Lexington Medical Center due to complications of covid. We wish to thank the staff in the ICU at the hospital for taking care of him.

Born on December 30, 1942 to the late Melba G. Sharpe and Joseph C. Gates Sr. He served in the Navy in the early 60s, and was on the carrier USS Hunt during the Cuban blockade and Berlin Crisis. He really loved his country. He worked with SCE&G and the City Of Columbia until he retired. He was a loving, husband, son, brother, father, grandfather, and friend.

He loved his family, friends and his pets. All of his life, he loved working on old cars and he built several of them. Along with his friend, Robert Madden, and a few of others, they started the “Early Wheels Car Club of Columbia” in the 70s. They loved going to car shows together.

He was predeceased by his daughter, JoAnna Lauren Gates; his sister, Dana Gates Butler; and his brother, John H. Gates. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Faye P. Gates; his daugthers, Elena P. Gates and Cynthia A. Gates; grandson, Kade C. G. Bell; his sister, Sharon G. Burkett (Thomas) of Blythewood; niece, Dana Angela Gates of West Columbia; nephews, Todd (Dean) Burkett and Brett Burkett of Blythewood.

Graveside service will be held at 2:00pm on Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209.
