Obituary of Bobby Clayton Vaughn

Bobby C. Vaughn, 83, of Springdale passed away peacefully in his home on March 18 after a brief illness. He was born in Orangeburg, SC to Louise & Cleve Vaughn on March 10, 1935 and later moved to Columbia during his childhood. Bobby was an accomplished athlete playing three sports at Eau Claire H.S. being name to the All City team in basketball. He was drafted by the NY Yankees in 1953 but followed his heart and stayed in Columbia. He coached baseball from Pee Wee to Legion and church basketball and softball. He was an avid golfer at the Country Club of Lexington and loved following greyhound racing. He was a passionate Gamecock fan as a member of the Gamecock Club for 29 years. He was actively serving on the Board of Directors of the Lexington County Chapter of the Gamecock Club. In 2014, he received the President's Award from the Chapter. Bobby was Supervisor of Gas Operations at SCE&G retiring after 37 years of service. In his retirement, he channeled his passion for cooking by catering events and cooking for his church, Springdale community and Gamecock Club events. A loving husband, devoted father, loyal friend, a kind and compassionate man…he will be missed by many whose lives he touched. Bobby is survived by his wife of 60 years, Freddie, and their two children: Steve (Connie) and Laurie; grandchildren Olivia (Brad), Matthew (Lindsay) and Clayton (Jamie); granddog, Cody; and 6 great grandchildren; brother, Billy (Mae) and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by siblings Margarite Vaughn, G.C. Vaughn, Jr., Pearl Chavis, Roy Vaughn, Mary Dawkins and his parents. A celebration of his life will be held at St. Mark United Methodist Church on Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at 3 pm. Visitation with the family will be held in the Sanctuary of the church prior to the service from 1:30-2:45 pm. Burial will follow the service in Elmwood Cemetery and Gardens. The family would like to thank nurse Angie of Palmetto Hospice for her compassionate support, although brief, for Bobby during his final hours of life.
