Obituary of Reverend Darrell Payne Wood

Reverend Darrell Payne Wood, 78, of Columbia went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on February 13, 2018. He was born in North Carolina to the late Otis Darrell (O.D.) and Amanda Payne Wood. He grew up in Roanoke, Virginia where he met the love of his life, Elizabeth Anne Dressler. He served in the United States Navy before returning home where he and Anne were married in March of 1963. He began his ministry by enrolling in Shenandoah Bible College in Roanoke, VA. It was at Shenandoah that God allowed him to meet and begin his long ministry as a student under Dr. Frank Sells. In 1967, God led him to move to Columbia, SC to continue as a student of Dr. Sells and attend Columbia Bible College where he graduated in 1971. He was thankful to serve as the interim pastor of Alta Vista Baptist Church in Columbia while finishing Bible College. He then went on to serve as the pastor of Congaree Baptist Church in Gadsden, SC, Fairview Baptist Church in Chesapeake, VA, and then Palmetto Baptist Temple where he retired after 32 years. He loved doing yard work, spending time with his family & church, and helping those in need. In his later years, he also took up running. He especially enjoyed spending time in his library studying God's word. He loved and spoiled each of his children and grandchildren as much as he was able. His consistent, selfless devotion to his wife "Honey" was a testimony to all who knew him.
